Geektastic Addresses Current Flaws In the Software Engineer Hiring Process

Spread the love

Over the years, different management teams across the world have hired countless software engineers. But many job-seeking engineers aren’t aware of how tedious and daunting the hiring process is within this industry. Depending on the company and/or the role being applied for, software engineers can encounter online assessments, coding challenges, multiple interviews, and more.

One example is Google, whose hiring process involves an initial online assessment followed by a virtual chat, then some project work, and finally an in-depth interview which then leads to a final decision and potential job offering. Now, an unemployed software engineer may encounter this process multiple times per week, which seems exhausting for candidates looking for a job.

CEO of Geektastic, Rick Brownlow, and co-founder, Charles Girdham, see this as a total flaw in the system, and believe the hiring process should be more considerate of the candidates involved. Their long-term plan is to fix the entire process, however, the most necessary evil to destroy is the technical evaluation aspect of it.

Geektastic works with well-established brands like Compare the Meerkat, Bulb, and Skyscanner, to measure candidates’ coding abilities without draining the engineers of their time or energy.

Geektastic’s platform takes the candidates into consideration a lot more than its competitors. On other platforms like HackerRank, candidates could fail because of a common syntax error in their code, a simple mistake even the most astute coder can make. However, Geektastic gives more weight to demonstrable ability in the rest of the code, as opposed to one minor error.

Developers who don’t reach a certain level required for the job in question will be told why and given constructive feedback to help them learn. This is in stark contrast to what presently exists on similar platforms where most developers are just left completely in the dark about why they failed, or worse, are never contacted again.

Geektastic also has interviewers in mind, as its technical challenges evaluate more than just technical ability. The challenges also examine specific software skill sets; this categorization allows interviewers to easily filter candidates and save a considerable amount of time with less burden on the hiring budget.
